Word Counting Basics
How does the word counter work?
Our word counter splits your text by whitespace — spaces, tabs and newlines — and counts each non-empty segment as one word. It updates in real time as you type or paste, with no button to press and no page reload needed.
Is my text saved or stored anywhere?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to our servers, never logged, and never stored. You can verify this by opening browser DevTools and confirming that no network requests are made when you type.
How many words in my essay?
Simply paste your essay into the word counter on the home page. The word count updates instantly. For a college essay, most platforms accept 250–650 words. For a university essay, check your specific assignment brief — most run 1,500–3,000 words.
How do I count words in a paragraph online?
Paste the paragraph into our word counter. The tool counts words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs all at once. It works with any text — paragraphs, essays, articles, emails, or social media posts.
Does the word counter include headings and bullet points?
Yes. Every word in the text is counted regardless of whether it is in a heading, bullet point, caption, or body paragraph. If you need to exclude headings from an academic word count, remove them before pasting.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Characters (with spaces) counts every single character including spaces, tabs and newlines. Characters (no spaces) counts only visible characters — letters, numbers, and punctuation — excluding all whitespace. Social media platforms like Twitter use total characters including spaces.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is calculated at 238 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed based on research. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute. Both are estimates — actual time varies by content complexity and individual reader.
Can I count words without Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Yes — simply paste your text into our free word counter. It works in any browser on any device, with no account required. It is completely free with no word limit.
How do I check word count in Google Docs?
In Google Docs press Ctrl+Shift+C (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+C (Mac) to open the word count dialog. You can also enable a live word count in the bottom bar via Tools → Word count → tick 'Display word count while typing'. Alternatively paste your text into our word counter for more detailed stats.
Does the word counter work on mobile?
Yes. Our word counter is fully mobile-responsive and works on iPhone, Android, and any mobile browser. Paste your text into the counter on your phone for an instant word and character count.
Character Limits by Platform
What is the character counter for SMS?
A standard SMS message is limited to 160 characters using GSM-7 encoding. Adding an emoji switches encoding to Unicode, dropping the limit to 70 characters per segment. Our character counter shows your live count against the 160-character SMS limit so you never go over.
What is the Twitter character limit in 2026?
Twitter / X allows 280 characters per tweet. URLs are shortened to exactly 23 characters regardless of original length. Most emoji count as 2 characters. Images and videos do not count toward the limit.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters. However only the first 125 characters show in the feed before a 'more' link — so make your opening line compelling. Hashtags count toward the 2,200-character limit.
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
LinkedIn feed posts are limited to 3,000 characters, with approximately 210 characters showing before a 'see more' link. LinkedIn articles can be up to 110,000 characters. Profile headlines are 220 characters.
What is the WhatsApp message character limit?
WhatsApp allows up to 65,536 characters in a single message — enough for a short novel. The WhatsApp Status update limit is 700 characters. In practice, very long messages are hard to read; consider breaking them into shorter parts.
What is the TikTok caption character limit?
TikTok video captions allow up to 2,200 characters. However only around 100–150 characters are visible before a 'more' link. For Reels-style content, keep your first line under 100 characters to maximise views.
How long should an email subject line be?
Most email clients display 40–77 characters of a subject line before truncating. Since over 50% of emails are opened on mobile (which shows around 40 characters), aim to put your most important information in the first 40 characters. The ideal length is 40–50 characters.
What is the meta description character limit for SEO?
Google typically displays 120–160 characters of a meta description in search results. Beyond 160 characters it gets truncated. Aim for 140–155 characters to ensure your full description appears. Meta descriptions do not directly affect rankings but strongly influence click-through rate.

How long should a cover letter be?
A cover letter should be 250–400 words and fit on one page. Too short (under 200 words) looks like minimal effort. Too long (over 500 words) signals poor communication skills. The sweet spot is 300–350 words with 3–4 focused paragraphs.

Long-tail keyword articles: 1,000–1,800 words. Write to cover the topic completely — not to hit a word count target.
What is the ideal word count for academic papers?
Abstract: 150–300 words. Short university essay: 500–1,500 words. Standard essay: 1,500–3,000 words. Research paper: 3,000–8,000 words. Master's thesis: 15,000–50,000 words. PhD dissertation: 60,000–100,000 words. Always check your institution's specific guidelines — they override general norms.

At 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, double-spaced text fits approximately 250 words per page. Single-spaced fits approximately 500 words per page. So: 1,000 words = 4 pages double-spaced. 5,000 words = 20 pages double-spaced.
Readability & Writing Quality
What is a readability score?
A readability score estimates how easy a piece of text is to read. The Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease score rates text 0–100 (higher = easier). A score of 60–70 is standard for most web content. The formula uses average sentence length and syllables per word.
What Flesch-Kincaid score should I aim for?
Blog posts and web content: 60–70 (standard). Social media: 70–80 (easy). Email newsletters: 60–70. Academic writing: 30–50 is expected. Children's content: 80–100. The right score depends on your audience — do not artificially simplify academic or technical writing.
How do I improve my readability score?
Shorten your sentences (aim for 15–20 words average). Use simpler words where meaning is equal ('use' instead of 'utilise'). Break long paragraphs into 2–3 sentence blocks. Use active voice instead of passive. Use our free readability checker to see your score and average sentence length.
What is passive voice and how do I avoid it?
Passive voice: the subject receives the action ('The report was written by the team'). Active voice: the subject performs the action ('The team wrote the report'). To convert passive to active, identify who is doing the action and make them the subject. Passive voice adds words and hides responsibility.
