WhatsApp Messages: 65,536 Characters
WhatsApp allows up to 65,536 characters in a single message — that is roughly 10,000–13,000 words, or more than a short novella. In practice, almost no one approaches this limit in conversation.
However, very long WhatsApp messages come with practical drawbacks. The recipient must scroll through a wall of text, and WhatsApp does not format long messages with any visual structure. For anything over 300–400 words, consider attaching a document or using bullet-point formatting with line breaks for readability.
WhatsApp Status: 700 Characters
WhatsApp Status (the 24-hour disappearing content feature) has a 700-character limit for text statuses. This is approximately 100–120 words. Status text disappears after 24 hours.
Tips for status text:
- Get to the point in the first 2–3 lines — viewers may not expand
- Use line breaks to create visual breathing room
- Use our character counter to check your status before posting
Formatting in WhatsApp Messages
WhatsApp supports basic text formatting using markdown-like syntax:
- Bold: *text* (wrap in asterisks)
- Italic: _text_ (wrap in underscores)
- Strikethrough: ~text~ (wrap in tildes)
- Monospace: ```text``` (wrap in triple backticks)
These formatting options make long messages significantly more readable and are especially useful for business communications, instructions, and announcements in group chats.
